He asked me to name my top five Lyle Lovett songs and the proposition flooded the memory gates with West Texas scapes and the stained glass windows of El Paisano. It was the last time we were all together and I hadn't realized it until Pontiac came to mind. It was the soundtrack of our road trip - it was the melody and hum of our tires on the hot pavement hundreds of mines from home. I've flipped through those photographs over the years and have often wondered how it was that we got here - a homeless musician, a lesbian mother of three, a ripe fifty year old woman just finding herself, and a wonderer. And how is it that we were held together then without the years we've seen since? The worst was yet to come.
