"It's a six hour drive, I won't be in any hurry to get there," he says.
"Where do you hunt?" I ask.
"Kerrville" he replies, his voice anticipates a confused expression.
"That's my home town," I say.
"Well..." he starts.
I already know where he's going; I've been there as many times as I've been asked where I'm from. You say you're from Kerrville and if they don't think you mean Kingsville they ask you if you went to Tivy High or if you know so-in-so. Then you have to say, "Well..." and disappoint them with the whole lot about actually living up towards Mountain Home which no one has heard of. By then you're on to talking about the antique stores in Fredericksburg. Anyway, I know right where this fella is headed.
"...it's actually outside of Kerrville, I go up into the Edwards Plateau."
"The Texas Divide."
"Yes!"
I ask if he stops in at Garven Store and after he nods he tells me about a midnight run for gas and snacks. The store was closed but he knew the owner lived just behind it and so he went knocking, asking if they would open up. My Uncle Billy greeted him with the barrel of a shotgun and said "Yea, we'll open up - check back at 6AM asshole."
"We call him Shotgun Billy," he says as we step out of the elevator.
I chuckle and wish him good hunting as I turn the corner towards my office.
